Saudi Arabia: A Few Guards, But No Security

The British Broadcasting Corp. (BBC) has announced it will provide its employees in Saudi Arabia with armed guards. This is a common practice in places such as Afghanistan and Iraq, but a first for the BBC in the kingdom. The decision comes after the shooting of two BBC employees and underscores the deteriorating security situation in Saudi Arabia. Hiring armed Saudis to protect a few BBC employees falls far short of the need to provide reliable consistent security for the thousands of expatriates in the kingdom.
