The Basque Country autonomous region of north central Spain saw Socialist leader Francisco Javier "Patxi" Lopez Alvarez, the region's first pro-Spanish president, sworn in May 7. Lopez has vowed to crack down on the Basque separatist group ETA. His election could spark a resurgence in ETA violence, as could longer-term changes in Basque Country demographics.
