Sri Lanka: Examining Its Own Potential

Summary

The Sri Lankan military captured the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam's last jungle airstrip Feb. 3 as the United States, the European Union, Japan and Norway issued a joint statement calling for the rebels to lay down their arms and talk with the Sri Lankan government. Though the fighting is not yet over, each victory by the Sri Lankan military gives the government more freedom to re-examine Sri Lanka's considerable geopolitical potential.
