By all appearances, the horrific shooting on June 14 that left U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise fighting for his life represents a case of an attacker who slipped unnoticed through the cracks in security surrounding U.S. leaders. A couple of weeks before James T. Hodgkinson's rampage at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, that wounded Scalise and injured five other people, including two police officers on Scalise's security detail, another potential gunman was snared before he could act. On June 1, the Pennsylvania State Police passed along a tip they had received to authorities in Washington, D.C.: A heavily armed Pennsylvania physician who had been making threats was journeying toward the capital. Thanks to the tip, D.C. police intercepted Dr. Bryan Moles after he'd checked into the Trump International Hotel and took him into custody without incident.
