Syria: Al Assad, the Sunnis and the Islamist Trend

The Alawite-Baathist regime of President Bashar al Assad is contemplating measures to contain an Islamist trend in Syria — at least until the international perception of Syria moves into a more favorable light and the government is better able to deal with threats to its power.
