Tensions remained high over the weekend following an exchange of artillery fire between North and South Korea on Nov. 23. The initial barrage now appears to have come from North Korean 122 mm multiple rocket launcher batteries moved into position near Kaemori specifically for that purpose. Further North Korean batteries have since been moved into position, and South Korea has reinforced its battery of K9 Thunder 155 mm self-propelled howitzers on Yeonpyeong Island with a second battery — doubling the number of guns to 12. Meanwhile, the USS George Washington (CVN 73) carrier strike group is in the process of conducting bilateral exercises with the South Korean navy in the West/Yellow Sea.
