ASSESSMENTS
Turkey: Making Use of an Assassination
May 20, 2006 | 03:20 GMT
Summary
The Turkish military called May 19 for sustained protests in defense of Turkey's secular character following the killing of a judge by an alleged Islamist gunman. Concerned that its influence over the political system is weakening, the military is using the incident to reassert its oversight role regarding the Turkish state, and will try to force early elections to decrease the power of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) party.
