Turkey's Ruling Party Navigates the Kurdish Issue

Summary

Turkey's Supreme Election Board on April 21 reversed a ruling banning 12 independent parliamentary candidates from running in upcoming elections following significant protests in the country's mostly Kurdish southeast. Already concerned by growing unrest in Kurdish areas in Syria and northern Iraq, the ruling Justice and Development Party does not appear willing to risk a Kurdish uprising within its own borders in trying to clear the election playing field.

Only two months before parliamentary elections, the ruling Justice and Development Party is in a strong position but remains worried about Kurdish unrest complicating its election plans....
