Violent clashes continued in Kiev on Jan. 22, with reports of the first fatalities occurring since anti-government demonstrations began in Ukraine in November. While larger protests continue to be held in Independence Square, smaller and more radical demonstrations have splintered off onto Hrushevsky Street. Several far-right groups, reportedly loosely organized under the name Right Sector, have been at the forefront of clashes with security forces. While the Ukrainian government has been able to manage the demonstrations up to this point, further violence could escalate the situation and bring heightened security and political risks in central Kiev.
