United States: The Dangers of Fighting International Organized Crime

Summary

U.S. federal agents announced the arrests of members of the Mongol motorcycle gang Oct. 22, the result of an operation that largely depended on undercover agents collecting information on member activity. This operation exemplifies the success that federal law enforcement agencies have in tracking and arresting members of domestic organized criminal groups. However, monitoring and breaking up organized criminal organizations that span international borders is a different story. While a few countries have proven willing and able to coordinate with U.S. law enforcement, the challenges of international police work make tracking down transnational organized criminal groups very complicated.
