The United States as Natural Gas Exporter

Summary

Advancements in natural gas extraction technology have contributed to a rapid increase in U.S. natural gas production in recent years. The United States is still an importer of natural gas, but if current trends continue, it could become a net exporter in the next few years. The country currently is not fully equipped for exports, particularly of liquefied natural gas, leading to a steep decline in the domestic price of natural gas in the short term as U.S. companies face market saturation. However, in the long term, U.S. exportation would be welcome for countries in Europe and East Asia, where negotiations over natural gas prices can be as much about politics as economics.
