Uruguay's Economy Poses a Challenge for the New Government

Summary

Uruguay's new administration is set to come to power March 1. The main challenge for the incoming administration will be rebounding from Uruguay's economic slowdown amid a fall in global commodity prices and growing tensions within the Mercosur trade bloc. Like his predecessor, Jose Mujica, President-elect Tabare Vazquez will attempt to gain more flexibility for Uruguay within Mercosur and expand markets outside of the bloc but will face obstacles on both fronts.
