U.S.: An Anomalous Missile Launch?

Summary

Reports have emerged that the United States may have tested a Trident submarine-launched ballistic missile in the Persian Gulf during recent joint military exercises with Saudi Arabia. While the launch has not been confirmed, and a STRATFOR source has denied it took place, such a launch could have profound implications for the region. It could signal that Washington intends to expand its nuclear umbrella to include Saudi Arabia and perhaps other Gulf states, and may also mean that the United States is shifting its stance to prepare for a day when Iran does possess nuclear weapons.
