Summary
U.S. President Barack Obama approved a plan to deploy up to 1,200 National Guard troops to the U.S-Mexico border to relieve U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations there. While details of the plan are still scarce, the National Guard likely will not have any meaningful presence on the border for at least six months, and the troops' role in border operations could vary significantly depending upon whether they are controlled by individual states or the federal government.
