The USS Ponce conducts an operational demonstration of its prototype Laser Weapon System (LaWS) while deployed to the Arabian Gulf. The laser system is a valuable addition to the U.S. Navy's already formidable arsenal, but it is still in its relatively early days and is not yet a replacement for naval cannons and missiles.
