In Uzbekistan, a Power Struggle Plays On

Uzbek President Islam Karimov has either signed off on the latest struggle between elites over the arrest of allied officials, or has lost control of reigning in power politics.

Several high profile arrests over the past two weeks in Uzbekistan look to be the latest struggle between two powerful elites: Rustam Inoyatov, who heads the state intelligence agency, the National Security Service, and Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev. On April 29, the head of GM Uzbekistan, Tohirjon Jalilov, was detained on charges of fraud, money laundering and embezzlement, as were other company managers and government members with ties to the automotive sector.
