At a presentation addressing Cote d'Ivoire's recent presidential election, the European Union Electoral Observation Mission (EU EOM) said the Ivorian Constitutional Council did not adhere to its legal mandate when it invalidated some votes, saying the council can only invalidate all votes and then call for a new election. The African Union, in its search for a peaceful but effective way to resolve the standoff between incumbent Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo and opposition leader Alassane Ouattara, could use the EU EOM statement as a basis for calling for a new election.
