Metropolitan Hilarion announces in Minsk, Belarus, the Russian Orthodox Church's Oct. 15 decision to break ties with the Istanbul-based Ecumenical Patriarchate over its decision to grant independence to a Ukrainian church that Moscow does not recognize.

Metropolitan Hilarion, who leads the Russian Orthodox Church's foreign relations, announces on Oct. 15 that the Russian Orthodox Church was severing its ties with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I after the leader of the worldwide Orthodox community granted a Ukrainian church independence from the Moscow Patriarchate. The dispute marks one of the biggest Orthodox schisms in the past millennium.
