Hilary Matfess is a Ph.D. student at Yale University's Political Science Department, where she focuses on conflict dynamics and gender. She is the author of 'Women and the War on Boko Haram: Wives, Weapons, Witnesses,' on the role of gender in the Boko Haram insurgency. In addition, African Studies Review published her work on developmental authoritarianism in Ethiopia and Rwanda. She is the co-editor of 'Beyond Convergence,' an edited volume on transnational threats to global security. Along with Valerie Hudson, she co-authored 'In Plain Sight: The Neglected Linkage between Bride Price and Violent Conflict,' for International Security.

Hilary previously worked at the National Defense University, the Institute for Defense Analyses and as a researcher with the Nigeria Social Violence Research Project at Johns Hopkins University SAIS. She has also worked as a freelance journalist and has done fieldwork in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania.
