Algeria: Negotiations Fail Between Government, Unions

Negotiations have failed between the Algerian government and unions of doctors and educators, causing thousands of schools, hospitals and clinics to suspend functionality, Asharq Al-Awsat reported Feb. 21. Algerian Education Minister Nouria Benghabrit dismissed 19,000 teachers who were striking, and said she would not return to the negotiating table with the National Education Union if strikes continue. Algeria has long been a beacon of stability in North Africa, despite instability and uprisings in its neighboring countries.
