Armenia: Yerevan May Lose Post as Head of CSTO to Belarus

What Happened: Armenia may lose its position as head of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) following the removal of Yuri Khachaturov from the post last week, Kommersant reported Nov. 6. Stanislav Zas, who is currently the state secretary of Belarus' security council, may replace Khachaturov as the new CSTO leader.

Why It Matters: Replacing Khachaturov with a candidate from Belarus would contribute to growing tensions between Armenia and Russia and could potentially cause frictions within the CSTO due to Belarus' support for Yerevan's geopolitical rival, Azerbaijan.

Background: The CSTO is the primary military bloc of the post-Soviet countries and includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
