What Happened: Chinese search giant Baidu Inc. has become the first Chinese member of the Partnership on Artificial Intelligence, an ethics group established by U.S. tech firms, Reuters reported Oct. 17.
Why It Matters: Forums such as the Partnership on AI are crucial for companies such as Baidu to establish themselves as leaders for AI adoption and products, as well as intellectual and ethical debates surrounding the topic. But while Baidu's participation will increase its international prestige and help it attract talent, the company will not necessarily be bound to any ethical standards the group sets.
Background: Ethical concerns have arisen as AI has gained controversial applications for the military and security. Such concerns have even prompted Google to back out of its partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense.
