What Happened: The Chinese Embassy in Kyiv excoriated U.S. national security adviser John Bolton on Aug. 29 after he criticized Chinese intentions to purchase a share in Motor Sich, a Ukrainian helicopter and aircraft engine producer, UNIAN has reported.
Why It Matters: The United States opposes the long-anticipated purchase because it would allow China to acquire technology that would enhance Beijing's air defense capabilities. On the other side of the coin, the sale could allow Russia to indirectly gain access to Ukrainian technology through its Chinese partnership, although Kyiv would strive to prevent any such sharing between Beijing and Moscow.
Background: Moscow was Motor Sich's largest client until the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in 2014. Because of the resultant loss in business, Motor Sich has considered selling sell shares to Beijing Skyrozon Aviation Industry Investment.
