China, Vietnam: Chinese Survey Ship Returns to Vietnamese Exclusive Economic Zone

What Happened: The Chinese survey ship Haiyang Dizhi 8 returned to Vietnam's exclusive economic zone on Aug. 13, several days after it had reportedly left the area, Reuters reported.

Why It Matters: The news confirms that the withdrawal of the Chinese survey ship was only temporary, meaning the risk of a confrontation between Vietnamese and Chinese vessels in the South China Sea will grow again.

Background: Vietnam decided in early July to extend the operations of an oil rig in the contested Vanguard Bank until the end of September in an attempt to push back against Chinese exploration in the area.
