Cyprus, Turkey: Turkish Drillship to Begin Exploration in Cypriot-Claimed Waters

What Happened: The Turkish drillship Yavuz will begin exploration operations in the Eastern Mediterranean on Oct. 7, according to Turkish officials, Reuters reported Oct. 4. The Cypriot government has condemned the planned activity.

Why It Matters: The drillship will carry out its exploration in what Cyprus claims as its exclusive economic zone and will include an energy block that the Cypriot government already had auctioned off to global energy firms Total and Eni.

Background: The Yavuz drillship arrived off the Cypriot coast in early July and its the second vessel of its kind that the Turkish government deployed into waters that Turkey and Cyprus claim as part of their exclusive economic zones.
