An attacker detonated a bomb at a checkpoint near the St. Catherine monastery in South Sinai Governorate, killing one officer and wounding four soldiers, Al Arabiya reported. The casualty figures are still emerging. Some reports have also indicated small arms were used in the attack instead of explosives. The monastery is a popular tourist site in the town of St. Catherine. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Islamic State's Wilayat Sinai has carried out a targeted and sustained campaign against Christians in Sinai since January.
