Ethiopia: Attorney General Files Charges Against Former Intelligence Officials

What Happened: Ethiopia’s Federal Attorney General has reportedly filed charges against 26 former high-ranking intelligence officials, including the former head of the National Intelligence and Security Services, Getachew Assefa, the Addis Standard reported May 7 via Twitter. 

Why It Matters: Assefa played a key role in corruption scandals and human rights abuses associated with Ethiopia's previous government. His seeming impunity in the Tigray region — despite numerous federal charges against him — have undermined Addis Ababa’s attempts to strengthen the country's rule of law and struggling economy. 

Background: Since coming into power in April 2017, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his allies have focused on reforming the country's political and economic system. Part of this effort has included corruption probes against former government officials.
