Europe: Bloc Prepares Response to Potential Auto Tariffs

What Happened: EU Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom said July 19 that the European Union is preparing a list of countermeasures to be used if the United States imposes tariffs on European cars, Bloomberg reported.

Why It Matters: The European Union is trying to avoid an escalation in its trade dispute with the United States, but Brussels wants to be ready to retaliate if the White House places a 20 percent tariff on European car imports.

Background: EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker will meet U.S. President Donald Trump on July 25 in the United States, where the pair will discuss proposals from Juncker to end the trade dispute.
