India: Indian National Congress to Hold Leadership Meeting After Electoral Loss

What Happened: The top leaders of India's main opposition party, the Indian National Congress (INC), will hold a meeting on May 25 following its poor performance in the country's general elections, The Economic Times reported May 24.

Why It Matters: The INC's electoral loss has raised pressure on the party's leader, Rahul Gandhi, to step down. But regardless of whether or not Gandhi resigns, the party will still need to adopt a new strategy to counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Background: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP secured a landslide electoral victory on May 23, expanding its majority from 282 to 303 parliamentary seats.
