India: New Delhi Deploys 35,000 Paramilitary Troops to Jammu and Kashmir Over Last Week

What Happened: India has deployed over 35,000 paramilitary forces over the past week to the country's northernmost state of Jammu and Kashmir as part of what India's Home Ministry said were normal operations, the Press Trust of India reported Aug. 2.

Why It Matters: Although the Indian government said the movement of troops was part of normal operations, large-scale deployments are likely to elicit a response from Pakistan that could include efforts to bolster its own forces in the disputed region.

Background: Kashmir lies at the heart of the geopolitical rivalry between India and Pakistan. A suicide attack against Indian security forces in February prompted New Delhi to launch airstrikes into undisputed Pakistani territory, which, in turn, led Islamabad to strike targets in Indian-administered Kashmir the following day.
