India, U.S.: Top-Level Trade Officials to Meet on Sidelines at U.N.

What Happened: Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is set to meet with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Sept. 24 on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, The Hindu reported Sept. 24.

Why It Matters: The high-level meeting is raising anticipation that the two sides might be on the verge of sealing a long-anticipated partial trade deal that would pave the way for further discussion on U.S. complaints about India's policies on data localization and e-commerce.

Background: In June, Washington ended New Delhi's right to benefit from favorable tariffs as part of the Generalized System of Preferences amid complaints from the U.S. dairy and medical device sectors' about the difficulty of entering the Indian market. In response, India imposed tariffs on 28 American goods, including apples and almonds.
