Iran, Pakistan: Khan Meets Iranian Leaders in Tehran to Defuse Tensions With Saudi Arabia

What Happened: Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to defuse tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Al-Jazeera reported Oct. 14.

Why It Matters: Although it remains unclear how far Khan can go in easing tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia, Tehran said it's ready to hold talks with Riyadh. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, meanwhile, said he didn't ask Khan to mediate between both sides.

Background: Despite Iranian-Saudi competition, Pakistan views both countries as essential partners in the Middle East.
