Iran: Possible Conservative Presidential Candidate Emerges

Iran's conservative Popular Front of Islamic Revolution Forces coalition voted on selected contenders to be the faction's candidate in the upcoming presidential election, Entekhab reported Feb. 23. Hojjat al-Islam Mehdi Seyyed Ibrahim Raisi won the majority of votes during the party's meeting, increasing the likelihood that he will emerge as the eventual presidential candidate for the group. He is a cleric, the custodian of a major Muslim shrine, and has years of experience in Iran's judiciary, including as a former attorney general. The presidential election, held in May, will pit candidates against moderate President Hassan Rouhani and comes during a period of uncertainty in U.S.-Iranian relations and recovery in Iran's economy.
