Iran, U.S.: Washington Accuses IRGC of Carrying out Persian Gulf Oil Tanker Attacks

What Happened: The U.S. Department of Defense is accusing Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps of attacking oil tankers May 12 in the Persian Gulf just off the Emirati coast, according to Rear Adm. Michael Gilday, director of operations at the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Reuters reported May 24.

Why It Matters: Similar incidents in the region would increase the probability of Washington ordering a limited military response, and Gilday's comments come just after it was reported that the U.S. government is sending an additional 1,500 troops to the Middle East due to rising tensions with Iran.

Background: The United Arab Emirates said May 12 that four oil tankers off the coast of the Emirati port of Fujairah suffered damage from what appeared to be limpet mines or another explosive device.
