Iraq: Militia Positions North of Baghdad Hit by Explosions

What Happened: An Iraqi Shiite militia position near Balad Air Base roughly 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad was hit by several explosions on Aug. 20, the Middle East Monitor reported.

Why It Matters: The timing of the explosion, which comes after a series of explosions at militia-affiliated sites, raises suspicions of an airstrike, perhaps by Israel, to weaken the capabilities of Iranian-linked militia forces in Iraq.

Background: Previous explosions at Iranian-linked militia sites have occurred under mysterious circumstances, with no party claiming responsibility for the incidents. While the Iraqi government blamed an earlier incident on a drone strike, it stopped short of accusing an outside power of conducting an airstrike.
