Iraq: Syrian Kurdish Forces Clash With PKK Affiliate

Rojava peshmerga forces clashed March 3 with Sinjar Resistance Units, an affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), in northwestern Iraq, Rudaw reported. Both sides blamed the other for starting the altercation, which occurred in Sinjar district, Ninevah province. A Kurdish security source told Reuters that there were deaths and injuries on both sides. It had been reported March 2 that hundreds of Rojava peshmerga were being deployed toward the Syrian border, into an area controlled by forces affiliated with the PKK. The Rojava peshmerga consists of Kurds from Syria and is aligned with the Kurdistan Democratic Party, the party of Kurdistan Regional Government President Massoud Barzani.
