Israel: Criticism Grows Against Netanyahu's Annexation Plans

What Happened: Several Arab states, as well as the European Union and the United Nations, have condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to annex the Jordan Valley and all Israeli settlements in the West Bank if he wins reelection next week, The National reported Sept. 11.

Why It Matters: Widespread criticism of Netanyahu's Sept. 10 comments could presage cooler ties between Israel and its Arab neighbors if the prime minister moves ahead with his plan. In recent months, Israel has tried to cultivate better relations with countries in the Middle East, particularly along the Persian Gulf, in an effort to limit growing Iranian influence in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

Background: Netanyahu is attempting to consolidate his voter base by appealing to nationalist sentiments ahead of Israeli general elections on Sept. 17.
