Israel: Netanyahu Reportedly Aims for Public U.S. Backing of Israeli Sovereignty Over Settlements

What Happened: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will reportedly approach U.S. President Donald Trump to gain his public support for Israeli sovereignty over settlements in the West Bank, The Times of Israel reported Aug. 12.

Why It Matters: Netanyahu's move appears intended to shore up support among right-wing voters just ahead of September's Israeli elections, although support from Trump could embolden the Israeli government to move ahead with additional annexations of West Bank territory.

Background: Israel has earned U.S. recognition for control of East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights since Trump assumed office in 2017, upending the policies of previous U.S. administrations that avoided making declarations about the disputed territories pending a comprehensive regional peace deal.
