Israel, U.S.: Israel to Bar 2 U.S. Representatives From Entering Country

What Happened: Israel will bar U.S. Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from entering the country due to their support for the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, according to Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely, The Times of Israel reported Aug. 15.

Why It Matters: Israel's decision to bar the U.S. legislators from entering the country will force the U.S. Democratic Party to adopt a position on the issue, which could inflame existing divisions in the party over the close U.S.-Israeli relationship.

Background: Demographic changes and new voting behavior are pressuring the Democratic Party to rethink its traditional support for Israel, reshaping the party's platform and influencing the views of presidential candidates on the alliance ahead of the 2020 election.
