Ivory Coast: National Assembly Approves New Constitution

Ivorian lawmakers approved on Oct. 11 a new constitution that will, among other things, reduce presidential eligibility requirements and diversify the makeup of future governments, Jeune Afrique reported. Voters must now either approve or reject the new constitution in a referendum scheduled for Oct. 30. Though many in the opposition criticized the reforms and the government's timetable in pushing them through, voters will likely approve the new constitution. The changes may well alter the dynamics of the country's political system, increasing the odds of stability after years of volatility.
