Kyrgyzstan: Government Temporarily Suspends Mining Operations by Chinese Company

What Happened: The Kyrgyz government has temporarily suspended mining operations by China's Zhong Ji Mining Co. in Kyrgyzstan's Naryn province after violent protests by locals against the company's presence, AKIpress reported Aug. 7. Meanwhile, China and Kyrgyzstan held joint counterterrorism exercises in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.

Why It Matters: Although joint exercises aren't related to the protests and the suspension of Chinese mining operations, both developments highlight Beijing's increasing economic and security profile in Kyrgyzstan.

Background: 20 Chinese workers and local Kyrgyz residents were injured during a protest against Chinese mining operations in Kyrgyzstan's eastern regions on Aug. 6.
