Kyrgyzstan: Governors Replaced, Defense Council Created

Kyrgyz Prime Minister Almazbek Atambayev replaced Sultanbay Abdrashitovich Ayjigitov with Arzybek Orozmatovich Burkanov as governor of the southwestern Batken region, Kabar reported Jan. 20. Mirbek Askerovich Asankulov also was relieved of his post as governor of Issyk-Kul region and replaced by Nurdin Turatbekovich Abdyldayev. Additionally, Radbek Eshmambetov was appointed head of the parliament's office, reported. Kyrgyz Television 1 reported the establishment of a defense council comprising the heads of parliament, government, the presidential administration, and the presidential office's defense and security department, as well as the prosecutor general, chairman of the State National Security Committee, and ministers of foreign affairs, defense, interior, finance and emergency situations.
