Mali: Rebel Group Drops Separatist Goal

Malian rebel group the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad has abandoned its goal of creating a separate state in northern Mali, according to a statement from the group, Reuters reported July 15. In April, the group seized control of northern Mali, which was subsequently seized by Islamist militias. A member of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad said the group is now seeking cultural, political and economic independence but not secession, and now believes the international community must help end the conflict.
