Mozambique: Several Opposition Figures Attacked

What Happened: Several Mozambican political opposition figures have been attacked in recent days in a series of assaults that resulted in at least two deaths, Voice of America reported Oct. 10.

Why It Matters: Mozambique will hold general elections next week, but a wave of renewed violence threatens to upend the voting process and undermine public trust in authorities' ability to ensure safety.

Background: Mozambique has experienced an uptick in foreign investment due to its large natural gas reserves, but it remains highly destabilized despite a peace accord between the government and the Mozambique National Resistance Movement, better known as Renamo.
