Palestinian Territories: Palestinian Authority Might Extend Control in West Bank, Prime Minister Says

What Happened: Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has said the Palestinian Authority might extend its control to all three zones of the Oslo agreement, including East Jerusalem, in response to Israel's decision to demolish homes in one of the zones, The National reported Aug. 5.

Why It Matters: The Palestinian Authority is attempting to increase pressure on the Israeli government to refrain from annexing territory in the region by implying the possibility of a new intifada.

Background: If the Palestinian Authority follows through on its threat, it would require the deployment of security forces to enforce its claim, which could threaten renewed confrontation with Israel.
