Russia, China: Moscow Reportedly Mulls Linking Northern Sea Route With Maritime Silk Road

What Happened: Russia is reportedly considering linking the Northern Sea Route with China's Maritime Silk Road, Arctic.ru reported May 29.

Why It Matters: The Arctic region is a key area of potential cooperation between Russia and China, although Moscow has thus far been unwilling to make significant investments into increased collaboration with Beijing. Closer cooperation between Russia and China and potential partnerships on infrastructure, logistics and research projects would likely pave the way for increased competition with the United States, which recently staked its interests in the area.

Background: Russian-Chinese cooperation on transport and logistics remains slow despite the joint Yamal liquefied natural gas project due to concerns by Moscow that Beijing's involvement would undermine Russian interests.
