Russia: Major Purge In Interior Ministry

Russian President Vladimir Putin carried out a major purge of senior officials from the Interior Ministry, Tass and Dozhd reported July 6. Among the officials sacked are Maj. Gen. Yevgeny Barikayev, head of the Interior Ministry's main auditing department; Police Maj. Gen. Andrei Andreyev; Lt. Gen. Yuri Shinin, first deputy head of the Interior Ministry's investigations department; and dozens more at regional levels of the ministry. Putin has steadily pilfered talent out of the Interior Ministry for his own personal units, including the National Guard, and continues to dismiss officials at the regional and ministerial level who are not loyal to him.
