Russia: President Hosts Turkmen Counterpart

What Happened: Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in Sochi on Aug. 15, AP reported.

Why It Matters: Russia is rumored to be interested in buying Turkmen natural gas again after it stopped such purchases in 2016.

Background: Putin and Berdymukhamedov both signed a legal convention on the Caspian Sea Aug. 12. While the agreement does not resolve all the disputes over access to the body of water, it could pave the way for energy projects such as the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline, which would improve Turkmenistan's ability to sell natural gas outside its borders.
