Russia: Putin Signs Decree to Send Troops to Central African Republic

What Happened: Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to deploy Russian military personnel to the Central African Republic as part of the U.N. Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic, Reuters reported April 16.

Why It Matters: Although the deployment will only comprise roughly 30 personnel, it could still help Russia solidify its influence in the Central African Republic.

Background: Russia has been developing a significant presence in the Central African Republic, where it has taken a key role in developing the country's military through support for the government, arms deliveries and other activities. Moscow has also facilitated peace negotiations between the Central African Republic government and rebel factions.
