Russia: U.S.-Sanctioned Oligarch Steps Down From Rusal Board

What Happened: Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska has resigned as director of his aluminum firm Rusal, in an effort to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump's administration to ease sanctions against him and his companies, RFE/RL reported May 25.

Why It Matters: Deripaska's resignation is the latest in a series of measures taken in recent weeks, including the resignation of Rusal CEO Aleksandra Buriko and seven board members, to get U.S. sanctions against the company lifted.

Background: On April 16, the United States passed sanctions against key Russian oligarch and officials, including Deripaska, hurting key companies such as Rusal.
